Core Review of Administrative Agencies
Phase 1: Months 1 to 4 - Completion Date: November 30, 2001

Government is committed to a core review and assessment of the mandates of all Crown corporations, public institutions and programs. As part of the Administrative Justice Project, the project director will facilitate the core review of the province's administrative agencies. These reviews will be carried out in accordance with a set of general guidelines and in consultation with administrative agencies and their host ministries.

The core review for administrative agencies will provide:

  • a profile of the agency's mandate, operations, expenditures and make-up;
  • an assessment of the agency's purposes and functions, including its relationships with other agencies and other government programs and services;
  • an assessment of the strengths, weaknesses and future needs of the agency;
  • an assessment of whether an agency's mandate is consistent with or complies with government's core values and priorities;
  • recommendations with respect to whether an agency should be wound up or consolidated with other agencies;
  • recommendations with respect to whether an agency's mandate should be defined more narrowly or in a different way;
  • recommendations with respect to other options for providing an agency's core services or programs in a more efficient and effective way.

The core review will proceed in tandem with Phase 1 of the Administrative Review Project. It will be completed by the end of November, 2001.
