Treaties and Other Lasting Agreements

Treaties and lasting agreements between government and First Nations are important reconciliation tools for creating social and economic opportunities for First Nations. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to economic development in communities.  The Province offers a wide range of tools to support economic development that will build stronger communities for First Nations and promote opportunities for community and business partnerships, including:

• The negotiation of treaties remains a top priority. Treaties bring certainty and economic benefits not only to First Nation members, but also to the surrounding region.
• Reconciliation Protocols encourage economic activity, sustainable growth and sustainable prosperity for First Nations communities.
• Economic and Community Development Agreements for sharing direct incremental resource revenues from new major mining, energy and tourism developments to increase First Nations participation in resource development.
• Strategic Engagement Agreements streamline consultation on natural resource decisions to help First Nations and the Province engage more effectively on land and resource development decisions.
• Forestry Consultation and Revenue Sharing Agreements provides First Nation communities with economic benefits returning directly to their community based on harvest activities in their traditional territory.
