Discussions

Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation staff undertake discussions with First Nations outside the treaty process on a wide range of topics related to the resolution of the land question. Discussions are informal so the level of interaction varies according to specific situations and needs. Initiatives can involve building relationships with First Nations, and addressing concerns associated with asserted traditional territory.

In March 2006, the Province joined local Aboriginal leaders and Fraser-Cascade school district officials to sign B.C.’s 24th Aboriginal enhancement agreement. The Fraser-Cascade school district is within the traditional territories of the Sto:lo and Nlaka’pamux Nations.

In January 2007, Government awarded the Lytton First Nation $30,000 as part of a $250,000 provincewide initiative to increase the number of Aboriginal nurses and improve nursing services in Aboriginal communities. The Lytton First Nation funding was to assist in the recruitment and retention of nursing services.

Also in January 2007, the province provided $8,000 to the Ashcroft First Nation to undertake a conservation plan for the historic Church of St. John at the Latin Gate.
