Musqueam Reconciliation Agreement Exemplifies New Relationship

Michael de Jong, Minister of Aboriginal
Relations and Reconciliation, applauds
Musqueam Indian Band Chief Ernest Campbell
as he holds a declaration celebrating the
Musqueam Reconciliation, Settlement
and Benefits Agreement. The agreement
provides new economic opportunities for the
Musqueam people and resolves many years
of outstanding litigation.
The Province has signed a landmark agreement with the Musqueam Indian Band, initialling a new era of reconciliation between the First Nation and British Columbia.
The Reconciliation, Settlement and Benefits Agreement is a full and final settlement of outstanding litigation related to the 2003 sale of the University of British Columbia Golf Course lands; the relocation of the River Rock casino to Richmond's Bridgepoint lands; and remediation for environmental damage to the Celtic Lands in South Vancouver.
The agreement was ratified by members of the Musqueam Indian Band at a community ratification meeting on March 10, 2008. Ninety-eight per cent of voters endorsed the agreement.
The Reconciliation, Settlement and Benefits Agreement moves the Province and the Musqueam Indian Band beyond a period of confrontation and into a new phase of reconciliation. The Agreement provides the Musqueam people with a solid foundation to move forward and become fully engaged in the lower mainland mainstream economy.
