B.C., Haida Nation Restore Name 'Haida Gwaii' to Islands – June 17, 2010

Premier Gordon Campbell and Minister of Aboriginal Relations George Abbott accept a bentwood box containing the name Queen Charlotte Islands at the Giving Back the Name With Respect Ceremony in Old Massett. At the ceremony the Haida Nation formally returned the name Queen Charlotte Islands and restored the name Haida Gwaii.

Province and three Treaty 8 First Nations Sign Agreements – MAY 20, 2010

Minister Abbott and Liz Logan, Treaty 8 Tribal Chief, at the signing ceremony for five agreements, including a final agreement, between the Province and Doig River, West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations. These agreements, together with five agreements concluded in 2009, will contribute to stability and certainty on the land base and help stimulate investment in northeastern B.C.

Lieutenant Governor Presents Hand-carved Canoe to the Province – April 27th 2010

From R: Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of B.C. officially presents a canoe that he hand-carved to the province at an emotional ceremony at the Parliament Buildings in Victoria. On hand to witness the presentation,
Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation George Abbott, Premier Gordon Campbell, master carver Chief Tony Hunt and Speaker of the House Bill Barisoff. Point named the canoe Shxwtitostel (pronounced: Schwe-tea-tos-tel) which means “a safe place to cross the river” in Halq'eméylem, representing the idea of a bridge between peoples.

Minister Abbott Witnesses a Gifting from the Nanwakolas Council – February 23, 2010

Minister George Abbott joined Pat Bell, Minister of Forest and Range, Dallas Smith, President of the Nanwakolas Council and members of the Nanwakolas Council First Nations to mark the gifting of a traditionally-carved, ocean-going cedar canoe from the First Nations to the Province of British Columbia. The gifting commemorates the ongoing partnership at the heart of the historic Coast Land Use decision.

Minister George Abbott visited the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre on February 6, 2010 to witness the opening of the newly renovated gymnasium. The Minister was joined by Susan Tatoosh, Executive Director of the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre, Paul Varian, CEO of Sport BC, as well as First Nations Elders, members of the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society and Aboriginal youth to mark the occasion.
