National Summit on Aboriginal Health

On November 28, 2006, British Columbia hosted the first ever National Summit on Aboriginal Health. The meeting, co-chaired by B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell and National Chief Phil Fontaine of the Assembly of First Nations, brought together federal government representatives, premiers and provincial/territorial ministers and leaders of National Aboriginal Organizations to discuss Aboriginal peoples ’ health issues and outcomes. The meeting focused on three key areas:
  • Leadership and partnerships,
  • Innovative and collaborative service delivery
  • Monitoring progress and moving forward.

Dialogue participants recognized the need to better co-ordinate and innovate health systems for improved delivery of, and access to, health services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Discussions highlighted some of the inspirational work underway throughout Canada, and how First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples are demonstrating their leadership in taking control of improved health outcomes.
