Honourable John Yap

John Yap was first elected in the riding of Richmond-Steveston in the 2005 provincial election. He was re-elected on May 12, 2009 and appointed June 10, 2009 as B.C.'s first Minister of State for Climate Action. Minister Yap is vice-chair of the Cabinet Committee for Climate Action and Clean Energy.

Minister Yap previously served as the chair of the Government Caucus. He was also a member of the Treasury Board, the Legislative Review Cabinet Committee, as well as the Select Standing Committees of Public Accounts, Crown Corporations and Finance and Government Services. He has also served as a member of the Special Committee on Sustainable Aquaculture and was previously a member of the Finance and Government Services Committee.

Prior to entering elected office, Minister Yap worked in the banking and financial services industry for many years. He has two degrees from the University of B.C.; one in science and the other in business administration.

Minister Yap is a long-time resident of Richmond-Steveston where he has been active in the community through organizations such as a Rotary International, the United Church and Lions International.

Minister Yap and his wife Suzanne have a daughter and son who are presently attending university.
