April 7, 2009
Ministry of Agriculture and Lands

The Province has made support for the agriculture sector one of its top priorities. B.C.'s commitment to promote a sustainable agriculture industry is outlined in the recently released B.C. Agriculture Plan: Growing a Healthy Future for B.C. Families.
- The Province is committed to ensuring that the people who produce our food have access to the tools, people and technology they need to remain competitive.
- The Province is working on a new branding initiative to promote buying B.C. food and beverages.
- The Province has invested $8.8 million in the Meat Transition Assistance Program, which helps producers comply with the Meat Inspection Regulations through assistance in the development of slaughter capacity across the province.
- The Province showed its continued commitment to B.C.'s organic industry with a grant of $225,000 to the Certified Organic Associations of B.C. (COABC) in May of last year.
- The Province is providing $4 million per year, to match federal funds of $6 million per year, to implement the Wildlife Damage Compensation Program.
- The Province continues to engage in research and fact-finding missions to examine bioenergy and anaerobic digestion options for more sustainable greenhouse and farming operations.
- Through support of programs like Fields for Your Future and organizations like 4-H, the Province is helping to engage youth and assisting in building a new generation of farmers and food processors.
- The Province continues to support First Nations community agriculture and healthy living through a variety of programs that help build agricultural capacity in aboriginal communities.
- The Province continues to implement our Agriculture Plan based on the five key strategies which are:
