FACTS ON OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS DEVELOPMENT

Letters to the Editor

Here are the facts on offshore oil and gas development in British Columbia:

  • Large amounts of crude oil and natural gas deposits are located in sedimentary basins beneath the ocean’s floor off the West coast.
  • It is estimated that approximately 41.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and about 9.8 billion barrels of oil exist off B.C.’s coast.
  • B.C.’s West coast has considerable potential, and is close to markets.  However, since 1972, the federal and provincial moratoriums have prohibited offshore oil and gas development activities from taking place.
  • B.C. is the only region in Canada with significant offshore oil and gas potential that is barred from developing this resource.
  • Other Canadian jurisdictions that are currently conducting or will eventually conduct offshore oil and gas development are: Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the Canadian Arctic (2006) – the total royalty revenues to these three jurisdictions are approximately $816.9-million. Canadian producers have expressed interest in B.C.’s resource, should the opportunity arise, and if it can be developed in a scientifically sound and environmentally safe manner.
  • The BC Energy Plan states that B.C. will work with the federal government, local coastal communities, First Nations, environmental organizations, and others to ascertain the benefits of this development potential and address the concerns associated with offshore oil and gas production.

I'm somewhat puzzled by Jim Harrison's March 21 column. On the one hand, he says governments should do their 'homework,' but on the other hand criticizes the Ministry of Environment for doing just that. [Read More]

Re: Premier Campbell: Where is the promised offshore oil? July 14, 2008
With rising fuel prices, it’s more important than ever that we move forward with the Gateway Program, so that we can restore public transit across the Port Mann Bridge, reduce congestion and wasteful idling, and undertake the largest expansion of cycling infrastructure in the province’s history.
