GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR RANCHERS, MEAT PROCESSORS

March 27,2009
Ministry of Agriculture and Lands

Letters to the Editor

This government is working to support livestock producers and meat processors in B.C. while helping to build an economically sustainable cattle industry to benefit all British Columbians.

  • The ministry is in close contact with industry leaders and groups like the B.C. Cattlemen's Association (BCCA).
  • We are aware of the challenges facing the industry and will continue to hear and respond to the concerns of individual producers.
  • From 2001 to 2007, the Province has provided $151 million to all B.C. farmers including $38 million to cattle farmers, through the core Business Risk Management programs to help producers manage their farm income risk.
  • Since 2001, the Province has given an additional $14 million to the B.C. cattle industry. Part of this funding includes:
    • $6 million for the BSE Recovery Program (2003, 2004)
    • Almost $4 million for the Cattle Age Verification Program (2006, 2008)
    • $3 million to implement a Beef Industry Strategy to match the drought relief program (2006)
    • $25,000 for quarantined cattle costs after an outbreak of Bovine TB (2008)
  • B.C.'s agriculture industry has also received $4 million annually to match federal funds of $6 million per year to implement the Wildlife Damage Compensation program. A portion of this funding compensates cattle producers for the loss of unharvested forage crop intended for livestock feed which had been damaged by wildlife and for livestock losses due to wild predators.
  • The Province has also invested $8.8 million in the Meat Transition Assistance Program, which helps producers comply with the Meat Inspection Regulations through assistance in building licensed slaughter capacity across the province.
  • In June 2008, the Province improved access to Class C transitional licenses to meat producers in remote and isolated communities. We also set up protective zones for those existing processors.
  • There are currently 71 provincially-licensed abattoirs in B.C.; 35 of them are fully licensed and 36 hold a Class C license. In 2004, only 12 abattoirs were provincially-licensed. When combined with the federally registered abattoirs, a total of 84 processing plants provide slaughter capacity to B.C. producers.
  • In January 2009, the Province provided $1.25 million to Thompson Rivers University for the appointment of a new research chair with a mandate to help make B.C.'s cattle industry sustainable - both economically and environmentally.
