SAFE SCHOOLS A PRIORITY IN B.C.
March 24, 2009
Ministry of Education

British Columbia schools are striving to develop positive and welcoming school cultures, and are committed to fostering optimal environments for learning. They focus on prevention of problems and using school-wide efforts to build community, fostering respect, inclusion, fairness and equity.
- In 2009, the Province, for the second consecutive year, proclaimed the fourth Monday in February as Anti-Bullying Day to support efforts to end bullying behaviours and provide opportunities for students to relate to one another in positive ways in schools and communities across the province.
- Through a partnership between the Province and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, all B.C. public, independent and band schools received “Safety and the Internet” parent guides to help parents keep their children safe when using the internet.
- The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General have invested in resources to address bullying and other aspects of student safety such as Focus on Bullying, Focus on Harassment and Intimidation, and Roots of Empathy.
- School districts are required to have codes of conduct in place reflecting Government’s commitment to institute “zero tolerance” of bullying in B.C. schools.
- In 2004, the Ministry of Education established provincial guidelines for codes of conduct for B.C. schools, including guidelines for boards of education and schools to have learning environments that are safe, caring and orderly.
- In 2007, more explicit expectations were set by the Ministry of Education through an amendment to the School Act and the introduction of a Ministerial Order establishing Provincial standards for codes of conduct for boards of education.
- The Ministry has also provided the education system with a supporting document, Developing and Reviewing Codes of Conduct: A Companion to the Provincial Standards for Codes of Conduct Order and Safe, Caring and Orderly Schools: A Guide (2008) to assist boards of education to meet their responsibilities under the law.
