Recent media coverage has focussed on the British Columbia government’s support of the Special Olympics. Here are the facts:

  • As result of the global economic crisis and the province’s fiscal situation, government has had to make some tough choices in order to protect funding for education and health care.
  • However, government continues to strongly support the Special Olympics in BC.

        That support for 2009-10 amounts to more than $415,000 and includes:
    • A total of $128,670 in core funding through the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport to help support 3,500 intellectually disabled athletes to participate year-round in 18 sports. This represents a reduction of less than three per cent from last year, when core funding totalled $132,600.
    • An additional $20,000 to increase sports participation. The Sports Participation Program is a bilateral agreement between the Province and the federal government that provides funding for pilot projects that help to introduce people to sport.
    • An additional $267,000 to 21 Special Olympics chapters across B.C. through community gaming grants from the Ministry of Housing and Social Development. This compares to a total of about $392,000 in community gaming grants to 20 Special Olympics chapters in 2008-09.
    • Six Special Olympics chapters in BC that didn’t receive gaming grants last year are recipients this year and 15 chapters are receiving gaming grants again this year. Some are receiving the same funding as last year; others have seen a reduction.
    • Funding support to Team B.C., which competed at the 2009 Canada Summer Games. B.C. Special Olympians were part of B.C.’s highly successful Games team which finished second in medals and flag points.

  • The Province is also providing more than $535,000 in 2009-10 to fund sport programs for physically disabled youths and adults, including programs for:

    • Wheelchair sports;
    • Disabled skiing;
    • Blind sports;
    • Sportability BC, which offers programs in Sledge Hockey, Boccia, Power Soccer, 7-A-Side Soccer and Sitting Volleyball.

  • The Province also funds the B.C. Disability Games, for athletes with a physical disability, with $120,000 annually.
