Facts on Public Schools

  • In 2009/10, the Province is providing a record amount of funding to public school districts at $4.55 billion, including an $84 million increase over this year (2008/09).
  • For the eighth straight year, per-pupil funding increased in 2008/09; and it will continue to increase for a ninth year in 2009/10.
  • Districts forecast that there will be 538,274 full-time-equivalent students at B.C. public schools in 2009-10, with an estimated 6,996 fewer students than in 2008-09 – nearly 60,000 fewer than in 2000-01.
  • Since 2001, the Province has spent more than $1.4 billion to complete 75 new and replacement schools, 147 additions, 25 renovation projects and 20 site acquisitions across B.C.
  • By the end of 2008/09, the Province will have committed more than $3.1 billion in school capital and maintenance projects.
  • Total funding for students with special needs is now nearly three quarters of a billion dollars each year.
  • Since 2005, the number of classes with education assistants has increased by nearly 30% and there are now 16,351 classes with assigned education assistants – that’s 24% of all classes and 972 more classes than 2007/08.
  • In 2007/08, the Province issued School Completion Certificates for 932 students with special needs attending public schools who had successfully met the goals of their educational program other than graduation, officially recognizing the considerable achievements of these students.

Facts on Independent Schools

  • Funding of independent schools started in 1977 and the present funding formula was established in 1993.
  • In 1989, the province passed the Independent School Act regulating all BC Independent Schools, whether they receive government funding or not.
  • Independent schools receive 35 or 50 per cent of the local district per student operating grant amount, allocated by group 1 or group 2 designation. Independent schools do not receive capital funding.
  • There are approximately 70,000 students at independent schools this year.
  • In 2005, government introduced changes to ensure students with special needs attending independent schools were funded at 100 per cent.
  • Funding for students with special needs at independent schools, increased by more than $17.1 million in 2008-09.
  • Parents may choose to send their children to independent schools for a particular religious, cultural, philosophical or educational approach.
  • In 2007/08, the Province issued School Completion Certificates for 43 students attending independent schools who had successfully met the goals of their educational program other than graduation, officially recognizing the considerable achievements of these students.
