SUPPORTS FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

This year the Province is providing $43 million on victims of crime and domestic violence programs – a $2.4-million increase over last year.

  • This funding includes:
    • $12.34 million for the Crime Victim Assistance Program to support those fleeing abuse and cover costs associate with counselling services, relocation, home-security systems, medical expenses and income support.
    • $16.47 million for over 250 counselling and outreach services delivered through transition houses. These are services formerly delivered through the ministry of housing and social development.
    • Of that $16.47 million, 12.54 million funds counselling and $3.42 million funds outreach.
    • $12.52 million for police and community-based victim service programs.
    • The remainder of the $43 million goes to operating costs for the ministry to run these programs.
  • The Province also provides a further $32 million through the Ministry of Housing and Social Development to fund 63 transition houses, providing 664 beds in 57 communities as well as 27 safe houses.
  • Since 2001 there has been an increase of two transition houses and 11 safe houses.
  • All transition houses are now open on a 24/7 basis to provide women with a safe refuge when escaping an abusive relationship. 
  • In 2003 the government  introduced and continues to fund the 24/7 provincewide confidential crisis line, VictimLink – a toll-free 24-hour help line offering immediate crisis support and referral services in 130 languages and dialects (1-800 563-0808).
