AgriStability Forage Example

Here is a typical example of a forage operation,

• This producer farms 350 acres of hay and raises 240 calves annually
• Calves are sold in the fall and breeding animals are over wintered using the feed produced on the farm

In 2023, extreme drought conditions resulted in very little hay production on the farm. The lack of hay production meant that feed had to be purchased to over winter the breeding animals, an expense not incurred in a typical year.
 

Step 1: Calculate your Production Margin for the Reference Years and the Program Year

• Allowable Income represents the value of the crop harvested each season plus insurance claims for lost production.
• Allowable Expenses are the direct costs associated with producing wine grapes.

In the fall of 2023 the calves sold at a higher price resulting in higher income, however the expenses also tripled due to extraordinary hay purchases. As a result, the 2023 production margin was lower than the reference year margins.
