MINISTER IAIN BLACK RECOGNIZES B.C. CRANE OPERATOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Minister Black is pictured here with crane operators at an event recognizing crane operators who have completed their CraneSafe Certification.

On April 8, 2009, Minister Black presented certificates to crane operators who had completed their CraneSafe Certification.

Since 2007, changes to the B.C. Occupational Health and Safety Regulation have made certification for crane operators a requirement.

The BC Association for Crane Safety is responsible for the CraneSafe Certification system developed with the support of the BC Association for Crane Safety, WorkSafeBC and industry.

PROVINCE RECOGNIZES FIRE FIGHTERS' LUNG CANCER RISK
The Province has introduced an amendment to the Workers Compensation Act to add primary site lung cancer for non-smokers to the list of cancers already recognized as occupational diseases for fire fighters, Labour and Citizens’ Services Minister Iain Black announced.  Minister Black spoke at the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters’ Association annual legislative conference.

$8.3M TO HELP FIRST NATIONS BRIDGE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE
At the Information and Communications Technology Summit, Minister Iain Black pictured here with Ruth Williams, CEO of the All Nations Trust Company, announced funding to help B.C. First Nations communities access broadband connectivity.

The Province is providing another $8.3 million in funding to help bridge the digital divide for British Columbia First Nations, announced Labour and Citizens' Services Minister Iain Black. The funding will be used toward First Nations connectivity to open up social and economic opportunities for rural and remote First Nations.

B.C. HOSTS TOP INTERNATIONAL PRIVACY, SECURITY EXPERTS
Minister Iain Black addressed an audience of international experts at the opening of the 10th Annual Privacy and Security Conference, held February 3, 2009 at the Victoria Conference Centre. The conference examined trends and current issues in the privacy and security arenas and included discussions among some of Canada's privacy commissioners.
