Family Bonus Supplement

Overview: October 1, 2012

Effective: October 01, 2012

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) administers the British Columbia Basic Family Bonus (BCBFB) and the National Child Benefit Supplement (NCBS) programs, which are collectively known as the Family Bonus (FB) under the BCEA legislation.  The FB is a monthly payment designed to assist low- and modest-income working families living in BC with the cost of raising their children.  The FB payments are combined with the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) into a single monthly payment from CRA.  Families must file their income tax return and make an application for FB each year in order to receive these monthly payments from CRA.

A temporary top-up supplement may be provided to BC Employment and Assistance (BCEA) families with dependent children as an advance for a delayed, cancelled or suspended FB payment.

An automatic top-up supplement is issued to BCEA families who do not receive the maximum FB per dependent child because their income exceeded CRA’s limits in the previous year.

A repayable advance may be issued to a BCEA family unit to replace a lost or stolen BCBFB payment.

BCEA families with dependent children under 2 months of age or who have reached their 18th birthday are not eligible for the children’s benefit programs administered by CRA. These clients may receive an increase in their BCEA support allowance in lieu of FB. They are not eligible for the temporary or automatic FB top-ups.

The FB top-up supplements and increased support allowance are available through the Employment and Assistance Regulation and the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Regulation.
