Honourable Gordon Campbell
In June 2001, Gordon Campbell was sworn in as British Columbia’s 34th premier, with the largest majority in B.C. history. He was re-elected in May 2005 and again in May 2009, making him the first premier in 26 years – and only the fourth in B.C. history – to be elected to three consecutive terms.
Since taking office, Premier Campbell has worked to build a strong internationally-competitive economic foundation in British Columbia based on low taxes, fewer regulatory burdens and innovative programs to support diversifying industries.
Today, British Columbia offers some of the most competitive personal and business tax rates in Canada and is a leader in job creation, economic strength, business confidence and fiscal responsibility. In February, British Columbia will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, further stimulating B.C.’s economy.
British Columbia has launched an aggressive Pacific Gateway Program, investing in priority infrastructure upgrades that will ensure that ports, highways, railways and airports can meet the growing volume of Asia-Pacific trade and that the province retains its position as a leading North American trade gateway. British Columbia’s infrastructure program is on pace to create up to 88,000 jobs. To ensure British Columbia has the skilled human resources necessary for a diverse economy, Premier Campbell has led the largest expansion of post-secondary institutions in B.C.’s history, including the creation of seven new universities.
British Columbia has become a North American leader in tackling the challenge of climate change, with a commitment to reducing the province’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 33 per cent below 2007 levels by 2020. The Province has developed initiatives to grow jobs and investment in the new green economy. British Columbia is home to a growing green-technology sector, with numerous research centers and corporations engaged in cutting-edge development of alternative energy, alternative fuels and energy-efficient products.
During Premier Campbell’s tenure the Province has taken historic steps to build a New Relationship with First Nations based on recognition and reconciliation. The Province has signed treaties covering six First Nations, including the first urban modern-day treaty, which has provided certainty and opportunity for all British Columbians. Premier Campbell has received two First Nations names in recognition of his leadership in bridging the social and economic gaps between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal British Columbians:
- Chamatook (“The one who is able to do the right thing and bring harmony”) by the Ahousaht First Nation.
- Nang Kaadlljuu (“The person who leads the people of B.C.”) by the Haida Nation.
Premier Campbell was Mayor of Vancouver for three successive terms from 1986 to 1993. Prior to that, he was a developer. He served for two years under CUSO as a secondary school teacher in Nigeria, Africa. Premier Campbell is married to wife Nancy. They have two sons and two grandchildren.
