PREMIER ANNOUNCES FUNDS FOR MERRITT SPIRIT SQUARE
July 25, 2007

MERRITT – The Province is providing $500,000 through the Spirit Squares program to the City of Merritt to transform a downtown parking lot into Legacy Plaza, a gathering place that will be able to host outdoor community events in the heart of downtown, Premier Gordon Campbell announced.

Premier Gordon Campbell and Rick Thorpe, Minister of Small Business and Revenue and MLA for Okanagan-Westside, presented a giant cheque to Merritt Mayor David Laird and Ron Sanders, president of Merritt's Walk of Stars Society on July 25. The Legacy Plaza conversion will see a downtown parking lot transformed into a civic square that will accommodate 500 and reflect Merritt's First Nations heritage and status as Canada's country music capital.

Premier Gordon Campbell visited Merritt July 25 to present the province's $500,000 contribution toward Legacy Plaza, Merritt's Spirit Square project. Featuring a waterfall and First Nations art, Legacy Plaza will also reflect Merritt's status of Canada's Country Music Capital. The square will accommodate up to 500 for year-round outdoor events.

Marking the July 25 launch of Merritt's Spirit Square project, Premier Gordon Campbell prepares to cast his handprint for Merritt's Walk of Stars. Legacy Square, Merrit's Spirit Square, marks the beginning of the Walk of Stars, a series of sidewalk plaques with handprints of country music artists who have performed at the famous, annual Merritt Mountain Music Festival.
