GOVERNMENT TAKES NEXT STEP FOR FLOOD PROTECTION

April 12, 2007 – John Les and local officials survey flood mitigation work being done near Creston. Just over $1.3 million in funding has been provided for dike extension and erosion protection on four projects on the Goat River channel and the Kootenay River.

In early March, the Province asked local governments and diking authorities to identify critical flood protection measures as a way to mitigate flood risk. The Province committed $33 million for flood prevention projects across B.C. on March 31. All projects must be completed before the 2007 spring runoff. NEW B.C. DISASTER RESPONSE CENTRE OPENS

February 23, 2007 – Solicitor General John Les was on hand for the official opening of the Canadian Red Cross B.C. Disaster Response Centre which will be one of the public’s chief information sources during and after regional, national or international disasters.

The $3.5 million B.C. Red Cross Disaster Response Centre, located in Burnaby, includes a $1.5 million cutting-edge call centre that can process 10,000 calls a day. At more than twice the capability of the old centre, this new centre will relieve the 9-1-1 system that is often inundated with public information requests rather than emergency reports during disasters. Other areas of the centre include; the Command Centre, the Family Reunification Centre, the Training Centre, a Volunteer Reception Area, a Volunteer Resources Centre and a Worker Care/First Aid Room.

"British Columbia has one of the best-trained emergency management programs in Canada. It is equipped to deal with 57 types of hazards," said Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General John Les who spoke at the opening. "These threats require a coordinated response and the Red Cross is a pivotal partner with the province in helping those who need it most in a disaster."

The Red Cross is contracted by the B.C. provincial government to provide emergency response support services and the Red Cross B.C. Disaster Response Centre would be activated at the request of provincial authorities.
