Electoral Districts Information and Maps
An electoral district (sometimes called a constituency or a riding) is a defined geographical area where candidates compete to be elected to one or more seats in the legislature. Once elected, they represent that district in a legislative assembly.
In British Columbia, the number of electoral districts and their boundaries are set in the Electoral Districts Act. For the May 2009 general election, there will be 85 electoral districts in the province. Electoral district numbers and boundaries are put into law by the Legislature based on recommendations by the independent Electoral Boundaries Commission.
The Electoral Map Under First Past the Post and BC-STV
For the May 2009 election using the First Past the Post system, there will be 85 electoral districts that will each elect a single MLA. The electoral map under BC-STV would still elect 85 members, but they would be grouped into 20 multi-member districts.
BC-STV districts would have a district magnitude of between 2 and 7 – that is, each district would elect between 2 and 7 MLAs. Most districts would elect 4 or 5 MLAs.
