December 11, 2008 – Minister Ida Chong, BC Hydro chair Mossadiq Umedaly and Ian Thompson (right), President of Canadian Bioenergy, were the speakers at a reception in Victoria to promote B.C.'s bioeconomy sector. The reception was organized by LifeSciences British Columbia and the British Columbia Innovation Council, the lead organization charged by the Province to advance innovation and commercialization in British Columbia. BCIC is focused on accelerating the growth of the science and technology communities and competitively positioning B.C. in the global science and technology economy.

Taylor Smith, a Grade 7 student at Renfrew elementary school, helps Technology, Trade and Economic Development Minister Ida Chong demonstrate the power of hydrogen in an experiment at Science World BC. The minister visited Science World to announce funding of $10.5 million, which will help renew facilities at the popular educational attraction and help build a new science park on the grounds. With the assistance of science facilitator Brian Anderson, Taylor and the minister ignited a balloon filled with hydrogen, creating an impressive explosion and showing the potential of hydrogen as an energy source to power vehicles that produce no carbon emissions. October 16, 2008 – Honourable Ida Chong, Minister of Technology, Trade and Economic Development and Cowichan Valley Mayor and Regional District Chair Jack Peake take part in the Island Coastal and Economic Trust and provincial funding announcement for the restoration of the Kinsol Trestle and Cowichan Valley Trail. $3.1 million was donated from the province of British Columbia. The funding will cover the costs of replacing damaged and structurally unsound timbers, as well as a new deck for pedestrian and cyclists.

October 16, 2008 – Minister Ida Chong and Cowichan Valley Mayor and Regional District Chair Jack Peake, look across the Kinsol Trestle, to discuss the upcoming restorations to the damaged structure and plans for a new pedestrian and cyclist deck - Minister Chong spoke on behalf of the province and acknowledged the difficult journey supporters faced to get the trestle to this point.

September 29, 2008 – Ida Chong, Minister of Technology, Trade and Economic Development, addresses 750 people gathered to celebrate this year’s B.C. Innovation Council Awards in Vancouver. Chong congratulated the winners – some of B.C.’s top researchers and inventors in health, engineering and other fields – for their accomplishments, applauded B.C.’s regional science fair winners who also attended, and thanked the council for its work to accelerate the growth of B.C.’s economy through science and technology.

September 29, 2008 – Ida Chong, Minister of Technology, Trade and Economic Development (centre, turquoise jacket), is joined by colleagues from the provincial government and B.C.’s top innovators as they celebrate with young scientists at the B.C. Innovation Council Awards Dinner. The high school students, who represented the province at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa, had just completed the council’s three-day Innovation Exploration program to find out more about science and technology education and careers in B.C.

September 29, 2008 – Staff of the B.C. Innovation Council join Ida Chong, Minister of Technology, Trade and Economic Development, at the council’s gala dinner to honour the province’s top scientists. Chong is responsible for the council, a Crown agency charged with advancing the transfer of leading-edge research to industry and spurring the commercialization of technology-based products.

The plaque marks 25 years of excellence in B.C. exporting.

July 21, 2008 – Honourable Ida Chong, Minister Responsible for the Asia-Pacific Initiative, unveiled the Gateway Calligraphy Collection in Vancouver. Commissioned by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the seven works represent the cultural, economic and political importance of the Asia Pacific Gateway.
