On November 16, 2006, Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, spoke to a Vancouver audience of business executives and Japan's Consul General at a dinner and opening reception to celebrate a new calligraphy exhibit by Japanese artist Ms. Isa Hirano. The art featured a special piece titled 'Gorin' which means 'five circles' in Japanese - a reference to the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

On October 2, 2006, Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development spoke
to the North Shore Business Success Group and other political and business
leaders in West Vancouver. Hansen emphasized the importance of continuing
to build trade and commerce ties with Asia; he said by putting local
representatives in Asian countries, B.C. will be better able to promote
itself as a globally competitive market and build on its position as the
primary gateway between North America and Asia Pacific.

Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Asia Pacific Initiative, spoke to delegates from China about British Columbia's status as Canada's Pacific Gateway and the current and future trading potential between B.C. and Asia. The provincial government is working to form new opportunities for trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region and is committed to building new relationships, and developing existing ones, between B.C. and China.

Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, spoke to students and teachers at Vancouver Technical Secondary School to announce the launch of 'The Skilled Life' campaign, which will attract more young people to a career in the trades. The campaign revolves around a youth-focused website -- www.theskilledlife.com -- as well as information distributed through school counsellors, career fairs and the media.

At the Union of BC Municipalities annual convention, October 24, 2006, Premier Gordon Campbell and Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development spoke at a networking session held by the Northern Development Initiative Trust. They were joined by the Chairs of the four Regional Economic Trust groups, Bruce Sutherland, Northern Development Initiative Trust Chair, Jim Thomson, Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust Chair, Mayor Barry Janyk, Northern Development Initiative Trust Co-Chair and Chief Nathan Matthew, New Relationship Trust Chair, who all gave updates on how their Trust is being organized and its future potential to stimulate economic growth in the area.

VICTORIA - Minister Hansen participated in a discussion around B.C.'s future in Asia with students and faculty from the University of Victoria's Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives on October 3, 2006. Students and faculty provided insight into Asia Pacific relations from their perspective, while the Minister provided an overview of the Province's plans for partnerships in the region and progress to date.

Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen, Dawson Creek Mayor Calvin Kruk and John Malcolm, Deputy Chief Administrator, City of Dawson Creek, toured the South Peace Community Multiplex on October 5, 2006, as construction continues on the 25,000 square metre facility. The provincial government has provided $2 million in funding, through the Community Development Initiative, toward the Dawson Creek AgriPlex project, which comprises part of the Multiplex development. In addition, the federal and provincial governments have committed a combined $2 million, through the Canada/B.C. Infrastructure Program, for the adjacent Dawson Creek Aquatic Centre, also under construction.

BRITANNIA BEACH - Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development joined Gary Lunn, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and West Vancouver-Garibaldi MLA Joan McIntyre, in the opening of the Britannia Beach mine museum September 29, 2006. In April 2005 the federal and provincial governments announced that the Britannia Beach Historical Society would receive $2 million from the Canada-BC Infrastructure Program to refurbish the mine's concentrator building, the last remaining example of a gravity-fed concentrator mill. The refurbished building will become part of the larger Britannia Project, a public showcase about the history of mining.

VANCOUVER - Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development accepted an award on behalf of the B.C. Olympic Games Secretariat as one of the award recipients at the fifth annual Spirit of Vancouver Awards luncheon on September 27, 2006 for B.C.-Canada Place at the Olympic Games in Italy, which provided a venue for over 80 businesses from British Columbia who met with over 125 companies. The venue was estimated to have garnered over $30 million in international media coverage. Frank Borowicz, chairman of The Vancouver Board of Trade and co-chair of Spirit of Vancouver, congratulated all the winners.

The ministers provided details on the groundbreaking agreement and its benefits to a breakfast meeting of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, and to media such as the Rutherford Show at Calgary's CHQR Radio station, where this photo was taken.

WHISTLER – Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen participated at the official groundbreaking of the Whistler Olympic and Paralympic Village, September 16, 2006. Children were on hand for the day, performing gymnastics, to highlight the legacy of the Whistler Athletes Centre as part of the Village site. Also attending the event were Federal Minister Gary Lunn, Chief Leonard Andrew representing the Four Host Nations, John Furlong from VANOC, and Whistler Mayor Ken Melamed.

VANCOUVER - Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen announced September 14, 2006 that a new Performance and Accountability Agreement has been signed with VANOC as part of a response to recommendations made in the Auditor General’s review and a due diligence report on venue construction from Partnerships BC. The agreement outlines how the Province and VANOC will work together to further strengthen overall performance and accountability and reduce financial exposure to taxpayers.

BURNABY – Monte Solberg, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and Colin Hansen, Economic Development Minister for British Columbia, announced August 22, 2006 the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will help speed up the process for immigrant entrepreneurs to get to British Columbia. The pilot project outlined in the MOU will allow B.C. and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to identify people who have applied to come to Canada as entrepreneurs. CIC will then contact applicants who have indicated an intention to settle in B.C. and steer them towards the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

VANCOUVER – Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen released the latest quarterly Major Projects Inventory, August 21, 2006. British Columbia’s hot economy continues to fuel record levels of construction. The number of large-scale construction projects planned or underway across British Columbia continues to reach new record highs, with the value of these projects now reaching the $100-billion milestone for the first time ever.

RIONDEL - Emergency services in Riondel are benefiting from the $20,000 Community Networking Infrastructure Grant (CNIG), announced August 2, 2006. The grant, funded through Network BC, will bring high speed internet to the community and assist volunteer firefighters in updating their training and facilitate communications during provincial emergencies. Network BC and TELUS signed an agreement in March 2005 that will see 119 communities receive broadband access points by the end of 2006. SQUAMISH - The Squamish and Lil'Wat First Nations has received $1 million to develop a new cultural centre in Whistler, July 24, 2006. Funding was provided by the Western Economic Diversification Canada through the Western Economic Partnership Agreement. The Province of B.C. has previously committed $6 million to the project. The facility will strengthen the cultural and ecotourism industry in the region. VANCOUVER - Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen, joined Wally Oppal, Attorney-General and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, to discuss British Columbia's immigration initiatives with Federal Immigration Minister Monty Solberg July 25, 2006. The meeting was followed by a roundtable discussion with the Joint Federal Provincial Immigration Advisory Council. The Advisory Council consists of representatives from federal, provincial and local government officials who deliver ideas, issues and concerns on immigration policies and adaptation services.

VANCOUVER - Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development participated in the first ever high level dialogue between the governments of B.C. in Vancouver June, 20, 2006. The governments of British Columbia and Washington have signed a joint letter to the U.S. President and the Canadian Prime Minister calling for a delay in the proposed passport requirements for people crossing the Canada-U.S. Border.

VANCOUVER - On June 21, 2006, the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada announced an agreement had been signed for the Canada B.C. Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund which will commit $102 million in combined funding, over the coming year, for infrastructure projects across the province. EDMONTON - Premiers Ralph Klein and Gordon Campbell, with British Columbia and Alberta Cabinet ministers, hold their annual joint Cabinet meeting in Edmonton, Alberta, on April 28. The agenda includes federal-provincial relations and interprovincial trade, and the Pacific Gateway project.
The goal is to improve efficiency and reduce costs on issues common to both provinces. Past Alberta-B.C. joint meetings led to shared services and initiatives, resulting in savings for taxpayers, businesses, and government.

Seen as the world’s largest biotech networking opportunity, BIO 2006 provides British Columbia with an opportunity to showcase the province as one of the emerging biotech markets and Canada’s fastest growing biotech communities to an international audience. TORINO - The Paralympic torch route included via Accademia Albertina, in front of BC-Canada Place, March 10, 2006. More than 100 people gathered on the sidewalk, including house staff, waving Canadian flags and a large Vancouver 2010 sign to cheer on the athletes and parade. The crowd was able to enjoy the actual turn-over of the torch to the next runner.

Margy Osmond is the Chief Executive of the State Chamber of Commerce of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia and had established the Sydney 2000 Olympic Commerce Centre in 1997. The RBC 2010 Legacies Now Speaker Series provide communities and local businesses with opportunities to hear and learn from individuals who have played key roles in developing community, business, tourism, and economic opportunities at previous Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Minister Hansen (right) and Sheldon Tetreault of the Métis Nation (left), open the carved doors to the house as part of the opening ceremonies. British Columbia-Canada Place will be B.C.'s home in Torino as part of the 2006 Winter Olympics, and is a key part in the Province's effort to leverage the 2010 Olympic opportunity to increase investment and economic development.
