November 30, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, spoke to the 2007 Conference for the Association of Service Providers for Employability and Career Training (ASPECT) about the current labour shortage challenges British Columbia is facing. Minister Hansen focused on the ongoing negotiations to transfer funding under the Labour Market Development Agreement and Labour Market Agreement from the federal government to the Province. November 9, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, toured the trades training facilities at Thompson Rivers University where he announced Pacific Coast Heavy Truck Group as the 10,000th employer to register with Industry Training Authority as an apprenticeship sponsor. Minister Hansen also received demonstrations in automotive mechanics, the new TRU Mobile Training Unit, welding, electrical and culinary arts and food service trades training.

October 12, 2007 – Vancouver – After his luncheon address to the Board of Trade, Minister Colin Hanson met with eight Leaders of Tomorrow and Company of Young Professionals members who were invited to an exclusive roundtable discussion. During the meeting, Minister Hansen answered questions concerning provincial labour shortages, Asia-Pacific economic development and investment.

October 1, 2007 – Premier Gordon Campbell (pictured, left), GE chief marketing officer Dan Henson (right) and Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Olympics, announced the latest step towards the revitalization of Robson Square. B.C.'s three year, $1.6 million sponsorship agreement with GE will help reopen the ice skating rink in downtown Vancouver. The rink, which had previously been closed in 2000, will now be known as the GE Ice Plaza and will be renovated and rebuilt and set to reopen in the winter of 2008. The GE Plaza will offer people of all ages a fun, free and vibrant public place to go and become part of the Olympic spirit during the 2010 Games.

September 12, 2007 – The grand opening of the $170 million Prince Rupert Fairview Container Terminal is creating a new high-speed, congestion-free trade corridor between Asia and North America. This hails a new era for Prince Rupert, a major milestone in the gateway initiatives of Canada and British Columbia, and a wave of new business opportunities for CN Rail and Maher Terminals. The terminal project has a design capacity of 500,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) and was funded, in part, by $30 million from the Province.

August 22, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, was onboard the Ile de Sein cable-laying vessel to help launch Project NEPTUNE (North-East Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiments), the world's first regional cabled ocean observatory. The Province has provided $38.5 million of the total $112 million costs which will assist NEPTUNE lay 800 kilometres of electro-optic cable across the Juan de Fuca plate. NEPTUNE will give scientists and researchers worldwide the ability to conduct off-shore and deep-sea experiments and receive data in real-time.

June 20, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, visited Williams Lake to attend the grand openings of the Cariboo Memorial Complex and the Tourism Discovery Centre. Both facilities were recepients of grants from the Canada-British Columbia Infrastructure Program while the Memorial Complex also received an Olympic/Paralympic Live Site award. Hansen also spoke to the local Chamber of Commerce where he announced the 2010 Business Network – a new online database to help businesses across the province connect to 2010-related business opportunities.

June 12-13, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, was joined by East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett on a tour of the Kootenay region. He visited various developments in Fernie, Sparwood and Cranbrook and spoke to Chamber of Commerce gatherings in both Cranbrook and Fernie about regional economic development, 2010 Olympic and Paralympic business opportunities and the effect the B.C.-Alberta Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) will have on municipalities.

May 22, 2007 - Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Olympics, joined Premier Gordon Campbell, David Emerson, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, and other representatives at the site of the Olympic Oval in Richmond to announce how the $110-million Games Operating Trust (GOT) will ensure 2010 Winter Games venues will leave lasting legacies.

The GOT was established as a source of funding to support the operating and capital maintenance of the Richmond Speed Skating Oval, the Whistler Sliding Centre and the Whistler Nordic Competition venue before and after the 2010 Winter Games.

May 22, 2007 - Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Asia Pacific Initiative, was on hand in Vancouver to receive the Asia Pacific Trade Council's third report, prepared by the Japan Market Advisory Group. The report’s six key recommendations and 25 supporting sectoral recommendations are designed to improve B.C.’s understanding of the Japanese market and advance the overall relationship.

May 11, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Olympics, opened the new site of the 2010 Commerce Centre at Robson Square. The renovated and centrally located facility in downtown Vancouver builds on services already offered by the 2010 Commerce Centre website -- www.2010CommerceCentre.com -- and offers visitor offices, meeting rooms and presentation space featuring the latest technology for use by members of the Olympic family, B.C. businesses and economic development organizations as well as visiting delegations.

May 4, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, toured Westport Innovations Inc.'s south Vancouver facility. He was briefed on the company's new low-emission, alternative fuel engine by Jonathan Burke (left), Westport's Senior Director of External Affairs. The engine pictured operates on liquefied natural gas and results in a 15-20% reduction in greenhouse gases and a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxides and soot over comparable diesel technology.

March 22, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Asia-Pacific Initiative, was joined by Parliamentary Secretary Richard T. Lee as he spoke to the Burnaby Board of Trade about how B.C. is working to build stronger connections with the Asia Pacific region. Some of this work includes B.C. establishing an in-market operation, developing a pavilion at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games and taking a leadership role in branding B.C. for Chineses customers, investors, students and tourists.

March 22, 2007 – Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister Responsible for the Asia-Pacific Initiative and the Olympics, was joined by Parliamentary Secretary Richard Lee to launch the Chinese- and Punjabi-translated versions of the 2010 Guide to Business Opportunities.

The launch took place at a roundtable discussion with members from the Asian media where Minister Hansen also spoke about the Asia Pacific Gateway project, B.C.'s upcoming in-market representatives in Asia, foreign credentials and his upcoming trip to Asia.

On March 21, 2007, Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, opened the two-day national conference, "Meeting Canadian Labour Market Challenges: Leading Practices Forum 2007". B.C. is hosting the forum to bring together experts in the labour market field to talk about common challenges and showcase leading practices in Canada and internationally.

Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap joined the Industry Training Authority on March 16, 2007, to launch a new mobile training facility called Trades Routes, which is a 53-foot, self-contained travelling classroom. It accommodates classes of 12 students per session and features welding equipment, drill presses and a host of other equipment and tools to provide hands-on training for welders, electricians, plumbers, pipe fitters/steamfitters and millwrights. The unit is also equipped with a satellite system enabling remote instruction.

On February 25, 2007, Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister Responsible for the Asia Pacific Initiative, attended the annual S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Fundraising Gala. Founded in 1973, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is a non-profit agency that delivers services to Canadians and immigrants in the lower mainland in five major areas: social services, employment services, business and economic development services, training and education services, and health services.

On February 23, 2007, Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development, joined Monte Solberg, Canada's Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, as the federal government announced improvements to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The new program will extend the length of the Temporary Foreign Worker Visa from 12 months to 24 months and will also reduce the amount of processing time for the federal visas.

Skills Connect is a program that assists immigrants upgrade their English language and employment skills to help fill labour shortages in the province.

The Summit brought together more than five hundred Aboriginal leaders and delegates from around North America to provide information on the $4 billion in Olympic-related opportunities leading up to the 2010 Winter Games.
