Victory Hill Dorm

Victory Hill Dorm is a supportive and nurturing home-like environment for children and youth living away from home while going to school at the B.C. School for the Deaf in Burnaby.

Children and youth ages 5 to 18 stay at Victory Hill during the week and return home for weekends or holidays.

Each child/youth has a child care counsellor, who manages their care plan and acts as a liaison between the school, professionals, students and parents. In fact, the child care counsellor and parents stay in contact on a weekly basis to discuss the child/youth's experiences, challenges and joys.

Children and youth live in six family-style homes designed in consultation with deaf people. American Sign Language is the primary language of communication and qualified child care counselors are fluent.

Safety, comfort features, amenities and supports include:

• Built-in flashing lights for telephones, doorbells, fire alarms and security alarms
• Open spaces and natural light make it easy to communicate in American Sign Language
• Private bedrooms and three bathrooms per house
• A safe and nurturing family-like setting makes Victory Hill feel like home
• Support staff available 24 hours a day, Sunday afternoon to Friday evening

Eligibility and admission: Students who are accepted to the BC School for the Deaf may contact the Victory Hill Dorm Manager to discuss placement at Victory Hill Dorm (VHD). The Ministry of Education is responsible for paying all the transportation costs associated with VHD children and youth travelling home every weekend and school breaks. Priority is given to children and youth who live outside the Lower Mainland and/or more than one hour commuting distance (one way) from the school. Families requesting VHD placement are encouraged to arrange a visit with the Victory Hill Dorm Manager. The Ministry of Children and Family Development is responsible for accommodation, meals, and staffing.
