Early Childhood Care

Your B.C. Government has launched programs and policies that support the health of children because a healthy start in life is critical to lifelong health.

What your B.C. Government is doing for Early Childhood Care:

  • The Province is investing $43 million to establish 400 StrongStart BC centres across B.C. by 2010. Currently there are 202 StrongStart BC centres in operation across the province, offering early learning opportunities for families with children who have not yet started Kindergarten.
  • Your B.C. government makes a significant investment of more than $600 million each year for services for children and youth with significant special needs and their families.
  • The Province is committed to the upgrading and expansion of BC Children’s Hospital, working in partnership with the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
  • Increasing the number of disorders screened for at birth to over 600 per cent, from three to 19, with $73-million in funding over three years.
  • Legislation banning smoking in vehicles with children under the age of 16 passed in 2008.
  • Your B.C. Government created the first ever Child and Youth Mental Health Plan in Canada, and doubled the funding to support it.
