Job Creation

Create more jobs per capita than anywhere else in Canada. 

  • Since December 2001, British Columbia's economy has added 363,000 jobs; 298,400 of these are full-time positions.
  • In 2008, employment growth in B.C. of 2.1 per cent was third-highest in Canada – exceeding the national growth rate of 1.5 per cent.
  • Since 2001, small businesses in British Columbia have created 172,700 net new jobs – 10,800 in 2008 alone.
  • At *7.8 per cent, British Columbia continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and has been at or below the national average since 2004.
  • B.C. has the lowest personal income taxes in Canada at every level for those earning up to $116,000 annually.
  • Since 2001, the B.C. Government has introduced over 120 tax cuts for British Columbians.
  • The Province is investing $14 billion in infrastructure projects in every region of British Columbia, generating as many as 88,000 jobs.
  • In response to global economic challenges, your B.C. Government has lowered the small business tax rate from 4.5 to 2.5 per cent for an estimated total savings of $401 million for small business, a 44 per cent reduction. This is the second lowest rate in Canada.
  • B.C.'s corporate income tax rate is 11 per cent, the second-lowest tax rate in the country, with further reductions planned to 10 per cent by 2011.
  • Your B.C. Government's BC Bioenergy Strategy provides $10 million over three years specifically for biodiesel production.
  • B.C. has set a goal of meeting 50 per cent or more of B.C.'s renewable fuel requirements by 2020 with biofuels produced in B.C.
  • Your B.C. Government has invested $3.98 billion in transportation infrastructure and paved 25,000 lane kilometres of highway since 2001. That's equal to the distance from Vancouver to Sydney, Australia - and back again.
