Make B.C. the best educated, most literate jurisdiction on the continent.

  • B.C. currently has the highest education budget ever – $5.175 billion – an increase of 27 per cent since 2001.
  • Per pupil funding is also the highest ever – an estimated $8,323 per student – an increase of more than $2,107 per-student since 2000-01.
  • More than $154 million has been invested in literacy initiatives since 2001 in B.C.
  • By the end of 2009-10, the Province will have invested more than $3.8 billion in school capital and maintenance projects across British Columbia.
  • Class size limits were enshrined in law in 2002, along with new measures requiring input from parents and teachers in 2006.
  • British Columbia has the most comprehensive class size and composition reporting in the country. 99 per cent of all classes have 32 or fewer students and 95 per cent of all classes have 30 or fewer students.
  • Since 2001, your B.C. Government has created seven new universities so students can get their university degree closer to home – Thompson Rivers University; UBC-Okanangan; University of the Fraser Valley; Kwantlen Polytechnic University; Vancouver Island University; Capilano University; and the Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
  • 35,500 new full-time post-secondary student spaces have been created in B.C.’s 11 universities, 11 colleges, three provincial institutes and the Industry Training Authority since 2001.
  • Tuition fee increases at B.C.’s public post-secondary institutions have been limited to two per cent annually since 2005, and over $2 billion has been invested in student financial assistance since 2001.
