Healthy Living and Physical Fitness
Lead the way in North America in healthy living and physical fitness.
- Your B.C. Government has created a ministry dedicated to preventative health: Healthy Living and Sport.
- The Province also created ActNowBC, a nationally recognized program for promoting healthy living and chronic disease prevention.
- Thirty minutes of daily physical activity is now mandatory for all K-12 students in B.C. schools, and $35 million has been invested in healthy schools initiatives since 2001.
- Your B.C. Government is establishing ActNowBC seniors community parks designed especially for seniors to help them stay mobile, physically active and healthy.
- Your B.C. Government's ActionSchools! BC model is accepted internationally as a best practice in health promotion and 100 per cent of B.C. school districts are participating.
- Banned smoking in vehicles with children under the age of 16; in indoor public spaces and workplaces; and on school and hospital grounds. The Province has also restricted the way tobacco is displayed and sold.
- Restricting the use of industrially-produced trans fat in the preparation of food in restaurants and schools by 2010.
- Your B.C. Government has banned junk food in vending machines in schools and government buildings.
- Your B.C. Government has invested almost $200 million since 2001 to help recruit, train and retain nurses.
- The Province has increased by 150 per cent the number of community addiction beds since 2003, for a total of almost 2,200 today.
- The Province has invested over $4 billion in hospital construction, renovation, and equipment since 2001.
- Opened B.C.'s first new Regional Hospital in three decades in Abbotsford - the $355-million Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.
- Wait times to access residential care have decreased from one year in 2001 to 30-90 days today.
- Wait times for hip and knee replacements have been shortened by approximately two months compared to 2001.
