Parental Choice and Involvement
Your B.C. Government is providing opportunities for parental involvement and input in their child’s education because parents have the right to be a part of their child’s education. We also believe in supporting parents’ right to choose home schooling or independent schools for their children.
What your B.C. Government is doing for Parental Choice and Involvement:
- In 2002, your B.C. Government passed legislation guaranteeing parents the right to volunteer in their children's schools.
- Created School Planning Councils (SPC) to give parents a greater role in school planning and decisions that affect their children’s education.
- Created the Parent Information Network to provide parents with information on tutoring, literacy, graduation requirements, post-secondary and career planning, health and safety, and supports for students with special needs and ESL students.
- Established the first-ever appeal process to provide parents and students with an avenue to address decisions made by board of education employees.
- The Province launched parent, student and school staff satisfaction surveys to give parents more say in their children’s education.
- Created the annual Parent Congress to allow parents from public, independent and band schools to speak directly with the Minister of Education about matters that affect their children’s education.
- Investing $14 million each year in grants for Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) to help them support their children’s education.
- Eliminated the Provincial Sales Tax on school supplies purchased by Parent Advisory Councils, allowing PACs to direct more funding to students.
- Your B.C. Government supports the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA), an annual province-wide assessment of British Columbia students' reading, writing, and mathematical skills.
