What your B.C. Government is doing for students:

  • Increased education funding every year to record levels, while enrolment has declined by nearly 53,000 students since 2001.
  • Raised per-pupil funding to the highest level ever – an estimated $8,323 in 2009-10, an increase of $205 over last year and an increase of $2,107 since 2000-01 (33%)
  • Invested $43 million in StrongStart BC early learning centres across the province to help children get ready for school.
  • Enshrined class size limits in law and established new transparency and accountability measures, such as requiring input from parents and teachers and detailed reporting on class size and composition. As a result, 95 per cent of classes in B.C. have 30 or fewer students and 99 per cent have 32 or fewer students.
  • Passed legislation that guarantees a parent's right to volunteer in their children's schools. New School Planning Councils give parents a greater role in decisions that affect their children's education.
  • Created more choice and flexibility for students and parents through BC's online school LearnNow BC and summer school funding.
  • Committed $3.1 billion in school maintenance, upgrades, and new schools across the province since 2001 to ensure students have safe and modern learning environments.
  • Since 2001, your B.C. Government has created seven new universities so students can get their university degree closer to home – Thompson Rivers University; UBC-Okanagan; University of the Fraser Valley; Kwantlen Polytechnic University; Vancouver Island University; Capilano University; and the Emily Carr University of Art & Design.
  • Your B.C. Government has created more than 35,500 new full-time post-secondary student spaces in B.C.'s 11 universities, 11 colleges, three provincial institutes and the Industry Training Authority since 2001.
  • Tuition fee increases at B.C.’s public post-secondary institutions have been limited to two per cent annually since 2005, and over $2 billion has been invested in student financial assistance since 2001.
