Systems of Support

Build the best system of support in Canada for persons with disabilities, special needs, children at risk, and seniors.

What your B.C. Government is doing to improve Systems of Support:

  • Your BC government provides funding to support approximately 90,000 licensed spaces throughout the province – double the number of spaces receiving funding in 2001.
  • Your B.C. government is investing $5 million to develop Vancouver's Downtown Community Court, bringing together justice, health and social services under one roof.
  • A record $469 million will be invested this year to create affordable housing and shelters, helping more than 85,000 British Columbian households - more than four times what was spent in 2001.
  • The Province's Homeless Outreach Program provides services in 49 including aboriginal homeless outreach communities, connecting visibly homeless people to housing, income assistance, employment counselling, and medical services. This includes Aboriginal homeless outreach.
  • Approximately 6,000 people have obtained housing through our Homeless Outreach Program and approximately 80 per cent remain housed today.
  • The Province has increased by 150 per cent the number of community addiction beds since 2003, for a total of almost 2,200 today.
  • Added almost 3,000 new community mental health beds since 2001, for a total complement of more than 7,700 beds.
  • Since 2001, the Province has helped more than 55,000 people transition from assistance into employment.
  • As a result of tax cuts made since 2001, 250,000 low-income British Columbians now pay no provincial income tax.
  • Other low-income earners have seen income tax reductions of more than 70 per cent.
  • Doubled the number of children receiving mental health support to nearly 20,000 children annually.
