What your B.C. Government is doing for women:

  • The Province is leading the development of a co-ordinated approach across government to addressing violence against women.
  • B.C. will spend $300 million on child-care programs this year – an increase of $8 million over last year and an increase of 42 per cent since 2001 – to create more opportunities for women to participate in the workforce.
  • We will invest $150 million in the Child Care Subsidy Program – an increase of almost 25 per cent since 2001 – to make child care more affordable for low- and middle-income families.
  • The Province has created an economy that has generated more than 186,000 new jobs for women.
  • The unemployment rate for women is now seven per cent, down from eight per cent in 1997.
  • The average hourly wage for women in B.C. was $20.32 in October 2009, up by 25 per cent from $16.26 in 2001.
  • We are working to ensure women’s safety through $50 million per year in domestic violence prevention and intervention initiatives.
  • The Province is investing $3.6-million in outreach services – including multicultural outreach – to connect women in crisis with needed supports.
