: The Office of the
Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs is the body mandated by the eight
Gitanyow House Chiefs to negotiate a treaty with Canada and
British Columbia under the British Columbia Treaty Commission
process.
Location
: The community of Gitanyow,
also known as Kitwancool, is located 20 km north of Gitwangak
(or Kitwanga), or approximately 140 km northeast of Terrace,
in northwestern B.C. (Three reserves on 850.4 hectares.)

Negotiations
The Office of the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs entered the treaty
process in December 1993, and is now in Stage
4 of the six-stage process, negotiating an agreement in principle.
Canada and British Columbia tabled a
proposed settlement offer on November 29, 1999, consisting of
$13.5 million in cash and seven parcels of land totalling 19,960
hectares. The Gitanyow are engaged in an analysis of the offered
parcels.
A subsequent fisheries offer was added
to the proposed settlement offer on
February 27, 2001, increasing the cash offer by $250,000.

As dates are established for
open public meetings, they will be publicized through the local
