Collaborative Stewardship in British Columbia

Last updated on September 7, 2023

Reconciliation with Indigenous governments and communities is a priority for the Government of British Columbia. Guided by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Province is working with Indigenous peoples to support and enhance Indigenous stewardship.

The Environmental Stewardship Initiative (ESI) and Collaborative Stewardship Framework (CSF) are two examples of collaborative stewardship the Province is undertaking with many First Nations across the province. Through these initiatives, more than 60 First Nations are working in partnership on stewardship projects that support resource management and embrace local and Indigenous knowledge.

Examples of other collaborative initiatives between the Province and Indigenous peoples include the Marine Plan Partnership, the Great Bear Rainforest, and the Natural Resource Sector Indigenous Liaison Program.
