About the Building Act

Last updated on April 30, 2024

The Building Act brings greater consistency to the technical building requirements in force across BC. Under the Act, the Province has primary authority to set technical building requirements and local governments can set additional requirements if a matter is ‘unrestricted.’ The Act also introduces standard qualification requirements for building officials.

Application

The Building Act applies in all parts of BC except the City of Vancouver and federal lands and reserves.
