Indigenous Engagement Requirements Funding Program

The Indigenous Engagement Requirements (IER) Funding Program provides funding for the implementation of the Indigenous Engagement Requirements within the Emergency and Disaster Management Act (EDMA).

This funding will assist First Nations and local authorities to engage in activities outlined in the program guide under resources. The goal of this funding is to support capacity needs, relationship-building and collaboration.

Funding allocation

All First Nations and local authorities in British Columbia will receive funding award letters without having to apply through a formal application process.

Funding will be distributed as described below. Recipients may choose to pool funds and share reporting requirement obligations.

First Nations Funding

B.C. First Nations will each receive $45,500 associated with a signed contribution agreement.

Local Authorities Funding

B.C. local authorities (municipalities and regional districts) will receive a funding amount between $40,000 to $65,000 associated with a signed contribution agreement.

Program reporting

To better understand recipients’ experience with the Indigenous Engagement Requirements Funding Program, an online survey requesting feedback will be sent out in September 2024.

Recipients will receive material in February 2025 to assist with meeting final program reporting requirements.

How to receive funding

There is no application required to access this funding. In January 2024, a funding award letter and Contribution Agreement will be sent by email to eligible recipients.

Eligible recipients are requested to respond by completing the Contribution Agreement to confirm participation. Recipients will be prompted to indicate the eligible activities they will undertake or participate in as part of the contribution agreement.

Program timeline

The length of the program is January 2024 to March 31, 2025. These are key dates for participants to be aware of:

  • December 2023 – Funding announcement and resources available online
  • January 8, 2024, to March 31, 2024 – Contribution agreements completed between recipient and the Province, and funding disbursed 
  • September 2024 – recipients will be requested to fill out an online survey. It will collect which requirement activities were being implemented, including how and with whom
  • February 2025 – a request will be sent to recipients to provide a final program activity update
