South Mission Integrated Planning Study

The South Mission Integrated Transportation Planning Study is being conducted to develop an integrated transportation plan for the provincial transportation network near Mission’s waterfront area connecting to the downtown core.

The study builds off the City of Mission’s Waterfront Revitalization Plan to explore how the provincial transportation network can support the redevelopment and enhance the multi-modal movement of people and goods in, around and through the South Mission area. Future investments are being identified to advance mobility, safety, and affordability and inform future land use planning to advance provincial goals for housing, economic development, sustainable travel, complete communities, and climate action. The study will identify multi-modal transportation solutions for the short, medium- and long-term horizons, including the potential realignment of Highway 7.  

Various levels of government have initiated planning processes for the study area corridor. These studies, along with regional and provincial development and transportation policies, will help inform the outcomes of this study. Examples include:

Status

Technical analysis and engagement are underway to develop options informed by input from First Nations, local government, transportation agencies and community stakeholders.

Schedule

• Fall 2023 - Preplanning - Technical work, including data collection, document review and engagement planning
• Winter 2023/2024 - Technical analysis and engagement - Vision, objectives and options developed with input from First Nations and community stakeholders
• Spring 2024 - Option analysis and refinement - Options shared with First Nations and community stakeholders for input
• Summer 2024 - Study findings - Options are refined and presented in a final study report

Engagement

The study is committed to engaging and working collaboratively with local First Nation communities, local governments, and transportation agencies. Input provided by First Nation and local government partners and other key stakeholders will provide an understanding of the region’s perspective of how the study can support economic growth, access to services, sustainable transportation options, climate action and affordability in the area.  

A diversity, equity and inclusion lens (GBA+) will be employed throughout engagement activities and all phases of the study. 

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure acknowledges that this study is located in traditional territories of the Coast Salish people including Kwantlen First Nation, Leq’a:mel First Nation, Matsqui First Nation, Popkum First Nation, Peters First Nation, Semá:th First Nation, and the Sto:lo Nations.
