The nominees for the 2022 Award of Excellence for Paving are:

Paving the road

  • Project: Highway 3 Wardner to Caithness and Local Area Side Roads Resurfacing 
  • Location: Approximately 37 km east of Cranbrook, BC
  • Contract Amount: $6.8 million

This project included asphalt milling and paving of various travel lanes, turn slots and full width conventional paving at various depths on sections of Highway 3 between Wardner and Caithness and local side roads in the Jaffray and Baynes Lake area. There was also miscellaneous asphalt pavement drainage work and culvert installations and construction of granular shoulders upon completion of paving.

This project resulted in improved safety and efficiency of the roadway, and a smoother riding surface with a higher level of safety and dust control improvements making travelling on this section of road more enjoyable for all users.

Road Resurfacing of Highway 19A Phase 2 (Nanaimo area) from Turner Rd. to Mary Ellen Dr. 

  • Project: Road Resurfacing of Highway 19A Phase 2 (Nanaimo area) from Turner Road to Mary Ellen Drive 
  • Location: Island Highway 19A from Turner Road to Mary Ellen Drive
  • Contract Amount: $4.7 million

This project consisted of base repairs followed by a 50 millimetre asphalt overlay, removal of vegetated median and replacement with barrier and intersection improvements at Aulds Road and Dickinson Road.

O.K. Industries Ltd. completed this project during night shifts in an urban environment with heavy traffic volumes from the local community, commercial vehicles and tourists.

The contractor exceled at traffic management which allowed the project to proceed on schedule but also limited stakeholder inconvenience. Due to a well thought out traffic management plan with usage of planned detours, there were no major issues with traffic control.

When issues arose from noise during night work the contractor was forthcoming with contact information for all supervisors, provided a project schedule to stakeholders, and attempted to mitigate excessive noise by adjusting schedules, limiting disruption to people living in the local area.
