Highway 1 - Malakwa Bridge

This project included the replacement of the Malakwa bridge and four-laning of 2.7 km of highway approximately 20 km east of Sicamous.

Malakwa Bridge Highway Project

Scope of improvements:

  • Replacement of the old steel through-truss bridge with a 98-metre eastbound and a 55-metre westbound bridge
  • 2.7 km section widened to four lanes
  • 2.6-metre paved centre median with concrete barrier
  • 2.5-metre-wide paved shoulders
  • Rumble strips
  • 1.8 km of new frontage roads
  • Two new protected T-intersections

Status

Construction was completed in June 2016

Project Benefits

  • Four lanes with wider shoulders, paved median, rumble strips and clear zone areas provides assured passing and improves safety
  • Wider four lane bridge eliminates the pinch point related to the narrow existing two lane structure
  • Eliminates risk of load-restriction associated with the aging structure
  • Improved access management allows safe movements onto and off of the highway
  • Widened shoulders accommodate pedestrians and cyclists
  • Improvements create better access points to local attractions
