About RoadSafetyBC

RoadSafetyBC is a branch of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. It's the lead government agency responsible for road safety in British Columbia. Our goal is for B.C. to have the safest roads in North America with zero traffic fatalities.

In working toward this goal, we collaborate with our partners including:

RoadSafetyBC and the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles' responsibilities

The Motor Vehicle Act regulates the operation of motor vehicles in British Columbia. The act makes the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles the administrative authority governing drivers. The superintendent:

• Ensures B.C. drivers are medically fit to operate a motor vehicle
• Prohibits a person from driving if they:
  • Have an unsatisfactory driving record, or
  • Pose a risk to public safety
• Orders some drivers, because of concerns about their driving, to take part in the:
  • Responsible Driver Program
  • Ignition Interlock Program, or
  • Driver Improvement Program
• Conducts reviews related to:
  • Sanctions applied by police under the act
  • Driving prohibitions
  • Licensing decisions made by the ICBC

The superintendent delegates decision-making authority to RoadSafetyBC staff and ICBC to perform. 

RoadSafetyBC staff

RoadSafetyBC staff include:

• Intake agents who receive phone calls, arrange hearings, administer reviews
• Nurse case managers who review certain driver medical fitness files
• Adjudicators who review cases, conduct hearings, decide and communicate with clients
• Analysts who conduct research, consult stakeholders, support legislative changes and launch new programs
• Managers and directors who supervise branches, projects and programs and collaborate with partners
• Administrative and information technology professionals who support the RoadSafetyBC team
